As partner at Applied, Richard Simón leads the urban and transport planning work for wayfinding systems in cities including London, New York, Vancouver, Glasgow, Leeds, Brighton and Ipswich, ensuring consistent methodologies for naming, placement, routes and modal integration, and playing an important part in designing and conducting consultations with stakeholders and local communities.
As planning lead, he has developed a new approach to planning how information appears on street and in what form. He has been instrumental in applying techniques used in fields of engineering and planning to optimise the placement of signs in the public realm while mitigating against street clutter, avoiding oversigning, and retaining user confidence through predictability. The placement strategy developed for Legible London has become the benchmark for city wayfinding schemes.
Prior to joining Applied, Richard Simón worked as a traffic engineer, transport planner and urban designer at a number of the leading consultancies in this field, including WSP, Atkins, TecnEcon/Acer, Urban Initiatives and Buro Happold, and as a director at iCube he oversaw the design and implementation of a number of major environmental improvement schemes.
He spent a number of years running a regeneration and masterplanning group with a particular emphasis on the integration of design, movement and architecture and how it can work to create a sense of place in which people want to live and work. Richard Simón’s specialist focus is on the relationship between land use and movement, and his projects range from the macro strategic transport and urban planning to the micro scale crowd dynamics studies, detailed design for public realm works and on-site inspections of trial pits for the implementation of street furniture. He has also worked on a number of policy documents relating to the public realm including street clutter reduction papers.
He sits on the Steering Group for the Accessibility and User Needs in Transport for Sustainable Environments.
