Poulin + Morris (New York) created a bold and energetic branding and environmental graphics program for the new 53,000-sq.-ft. Athletics and Wellness Center at Convent of the Sacred Heart School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Established in 1881, Convent of the Sacred Heart is the oldest independent school for girls in New York City. In the new athletic and wellness center, P+M designed vibrant murals that feature stroboscopic action photographs of some of the school’s top athletes. The life-size photographs depict, frame by frame, the sequence of the students’ motions as they play basketball, dance, tennis, and other sports and wellness activities. To complement these empowering images, bold, large-scale typography is integrated into the murals, spelling out words that represent the school’s core values (dream, focus, success), complementing these empowering images.
Additional murals were created for the center’s main circulation stairwell, displaying super-scaled motivational words such as “strive,” “win,” and “lead” that continuously span the building’s five levels. Situated in front of each stair landing, the murals playfully emulate strategy diagrams by featuring x’s, o’s, and arrows typically used in outlining sports plays.
Poulin + Morris has continued to work with the school in developing a comprehensive base building sign and donor recognition program for the Athletics and Wellness Center.
