Portraits of Iowa – A Community Light Fall

Portraits of Iowa

Read Time: 1 minute

Last Spring the Cedar Rapids, City Development Committee and The city’s Visual Arts Commission invested in a signature public art installation, titled Portraits of Iowa that was created by Seattle-based artist and architect John Flemming. His project was selected from more than 80 applicants and nine finalists.

The purpose of the Portraits of Iowa project was to partner with the community and local photographers to capture their view of Iowa and to include their photos in a suspended ‘light fall’ from a highly visible location in the foyer of the convention center attached to the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids. A web portal was constructed by Flemming’s son, Andy Flemming, that allowed the community to participate in the project by sharing their photos.  They could share anything they liked depicting interesting places or objects in and around their neighborhoods.

The completed installation is 34 feet tall and 10 feet-by-10 feet wide. It floats 11 feet overhead from the ground floor, and visitors on the second-floor balcony can look up or down to view images.

The uploaded collection became the 340 Portraits of Iowa printed on 8" to 18" acrylic sheets that were suspended and interspersed with 275 dangling acrylic/dichroic prisms. By day, sunlight activates the suspended prisms casting a surprising array of rainbow-like shards. At night, LEDs light up the tall lantern-shaped space. Day or night the installation is stunning.

John Fleming partnered with SuperGraphics for the print and fabrication. SuperGraphics was contracted to produce the acrylic images, dichroic prisms, and help manage logistics. Each image was unique and required careful attention while printing, cutting, and packaging for shipping. Great care was made during the print and fabrication process to ensure that not a single piece out of 615 created, left the building with a scratch, blemish, or flaw.

SuperGraphics brings extensive experience and capabilities to the table each day in order to custom fabricate signs, wall murals, and graphics of many shapes and sizes, including works of art.  We are proud to have worked with John on this project and are ecstatic with the result.
