The 2023 SEGD Wayfinding + Placemaking Symposium will feature the panel discussion “Passenger Experience - The Critical Factor in Wayfinding + Placemaking” on Friday, April 28. Register now to hear from panelists representing design, client and manufacturer: Ryan Kellogg, Gensler DXD Creative Director at Gensler, Ryan Taylor Business Consultant at Delta Air Lines, and Todd Green, Global Transportation Manager at Nanolumens.

The competitive nature of airports often has leadership tracking travel-focused rankings from sources such as J.D. Power, Skytrax, Travel & Leisure, etc. One of the common denominators most measured is “passenger experience.”

This moderated panel will discuss themes centered about Passenger Experience including the impact of wayfinding and placemaking, the intersection of design and technology and its impact on content and information communication, and thoughts on how smaller market airports can harness these advances with smaller budgets.

“Technology is rapidly evolving to elevate the passenger experience in ways that were unthinkable a few years ago. Where digital signage was once an afterthought, it is now part of the design and no longer boxed in by an antiquated 16:9 paradigm. I’m excited to share Delta Air Lines’ perspective on how technology and design are working together to better serve our customers from curb to gate, says Ryan Taylor, Business Consultant at Delta Air Lines.

According to Gensler’s 2022 Design Forecast, “Growth opportunities for airports are through more efficient use of existing space, rather than adding capacity. Airports are not feeling the need to add gates to increase capacity. Rather, the trend is to increase capacity by looking holistically at a better passenger experience in the terminal. While that may mean growing holdroom areas, it can also involve the better use of space by using technology to give confidence that passengers will smoothly get from landside to airside.”

“Placemaking is more than geometry.  It’s about experiences.  Digital technologies have become so pervasive in our lives that buildings need to be designed as multisensory ecosystems, with a digital-first mindset for the benefit of the users. We’re excited to have what is sure to be a provocative and interesting conversation,” says Ryan Kellogg, Gensler DXD Creative Director.

This moderated panel will offer forecasts on how design trends may impact airports moving forward and how these trends could contribute to the customer journey.

“The design trends in airport spaces have been quickly evolving to match the competitive nature of the segment, and the investment infusion we’ve seen across the country.  Every airport and premium air carrier are chasing the passenger experience, utilizing new technology solutions, and trying to up their game.  This should be an informative and lively discussion, and we’re excited to be part of it, says Todd Green, Nanolumens Global Manager – Airports and Transportation.
