Mikyoung Kim is the founder and design director at mikyoung kim design in the greater Boston area.

Mikyoung is an award-winning, international landscape architect and artist whose work focuses on merging sculptural vision with the urban landscape. As design director, Mikyoung Kim has brought her background in sculpture and music, as well as her design vision as a landscape architect, to her firm’s diverse work. Known for culturally significant designs that serve as a powerful tool to celebrate the beauty of the collective human experience, Mikyoung has crafted an exceptional body of work that has been highlighted in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Architectural Record, Dwell, Surface, Garden Design, and the Chicago Tribune. She was named an AD innovator by Architectural Digest and has been awarded design excellence honors from ASLA, the AIA, the GSA, and IFLA. Mikyoung is a fellow with the American Society of Landscape Architects and a recipient of the prestigious BSA’s Women in Design Award. Her work is featured in the Smithsonian Museum “American Voices” Collection. A frequent international speaker, Mikyoung Kim has lectured at academic institutions, professional organizations, botanic gardens, museums, and art institutes. 

Mikyoung is a Professor Emerita at the Rhode Island School of Design. She was a Professor at Rhode Island School of Design from 1994-2012 and during that full time tenure served as Chair of the department. Her work with students is an evolving laboratory that explores design materials and process, developing innovative ways of integrating sustainability with sculptural form. In addition to this experience, from 2017 to 2018 Kim was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Kim graduated from Oberlin College with a Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture and Art History, with a Minor in Music. She then later on attended Harvard University to achieve a Masters in Landscape Architecture. Mikyoung Kim volunteers for several organizations. She is a board member at turf advisory, on the Council of Fellows at the American Society of Landscape Architect, and on the Board of Directors at The Walden School.
