Making the World a Better Place Through Culture

“How can we democratize public spaces? When you really want to draw different people into different spaces, you’re designing intentionally. You have the power to do that. You have the power to make the world a better place, through the spaces you’re designing.”

– Joy Bailey-Bryant, President, Lord Cultural Resources

Making space to share everyone’s stories is the central topic of Joy Bailey-Bryant’s keynote address to attendees of the 2021 SEGD Annual Conference in Philadelphia (Nov 4–6, 2021).
A video of Joy’s presentation is now available for viewing virtually for one week.

Today’s cultural audiences (people of all backgrounds) are examining, wrestling with, and understanding the stories of their own cultures as well as those of others. In her talk, Joy discusses ways that the presence of equitable arts and cultural programming makes public space public (in places such as museums, parks, gardens, libraries, and community centers) and how acknowledgement can lead to connections and the democratization of these spaces.
