I am Lyka Williams, a multidisciplinary designer and current EDP Experience + Exhibition Design Graduate Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). My artistic practice and experience span Experiential Design, Retail Store Design, and Graphic Design.
Having obtained my B.A. in Architecture from Miami University, Oxford, OH, my love for design often found me at the intersection of learning, experiences, and fun. Being born and raised in the Caribbean, my upbringing strongly influences my work by using vibrant colors and messages of optimism to aid me in "designing the unexpected" through impactful and meaningful experiences. From this design principle, I often veer toward creating dynamic environments of uninhibited joy and cultural connectivity that foster a core sense of play or action to amplify brand voices.
My work in the experiential and retail store design industries comes from the traditional brick-and-mortar setting behind the corporate lens. For example, at Starbucks, I participated in in-house design phases for new store and renovation projects, from concept and design development to fabrication across the New York Metro region. While also understanding materiality, creating schematic design packages, and managing yearly store open schedules within tight timelines. It's safe to say I ate crazy deadlines for dinner and last-minute design changes for dessert as I simultaneously balanced my graduate course load— demonstrating high-level organization and time management. Whereas, at MKG, I quickly adapted to the fast-paced design schedule as a freelance experiential designer, working on projects for clients such as OGX, Kindfull, Google, Netflix, and Spotify, to name a few.
From these experiences, I've found an inherent love and interest in designing spaces that bridge the gap between interactive realities and the imagination through visual communication, universal inclusion, + storytelling. I am currently in my last year of Graduate school and am working towards graduation in the Winter of 2022.
