Kayla Van Name is a graduate student pursuing her Master's in Exhibition and Experience design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She is passionate about creating immersive experiences and telling stories that reignite curiosity, and foster emotional connection.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University in 2016, Kayla worked for the multidisciplinary design firm Arup in San Francisco and Boston. During her time with Arup, she developed technical problem solving skills, and collaborated with a wide range of design disciplines to serve high-profile corporate clients, universities, museums and transit authorities. Once she discovered the exhibition and experience design industry however, she yearned to be on the more creative side of design—developing new ideas, sharing engaging stories, and starting conversations.
Kayla is interested in designing both physical and digital installations that focus on visitor needs and create memorable impressions. She is eager to explore emerging technologies and how they might be implemented to bring experiential design to the next level. At FIT, she was awarded the Dean’s Fellowship, where she conducted research and case studies on the use of augmented reality for experiential wayfinding. Kayla is expecting to complete her Master’s degree in December 2021. She looks forward to contributing to the future of experiential design, and transforming the way we interact with the world around us.
