Joe Thoma is a versatile graphic designer with Cloud Gehshan Associates; a critical thinker / problem solver / creative, with a design education that has equipped him with many related talents including illustration, photography and interaction design.
Joe Thoma was first introduced to environmental graphic design when he participated in an SEGD Summer Workshop. During the workshop, he analyzed an existing signage system and incorporated user-based research into an effective and user-friendly wayfinding system.
Before joining CGA, Joe Thoma was a designer for Contempo Communications in Cleveland, Ohio, where he designed and illustrated environmental information graphics for Major League Baseball. He was also a graphic design intern at Majestic Steel USA. There, he prepared, proofed, and scheduled weekly report, managed the ideation, refinement, and completion of multiple projects at different stages of development, produced print and web ready artwork inside of brand guidelines, and developed new associate training manual focusing on distillation and simplification of steel industry and production.
Joe Thoma earned a BFA in Visual Communication Design with minors in Marketing and Photo Illustration from Kent State University, where he studied 2D & 3D design, environmental design, and interaction design, with a splash of marketing and photography. While earning his degree, Joe studied abroad in Germany and the Czech Republic where he observed how users experience historic spaces and exhibits.
Not only does he believe that design should be beautiful, but more importantly it should be functional. Creating value through design for the user via research, process, and application.
