Ian Kerrigan is the Senior Vice President for Exhibitions at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City where he oversees content development and curatorial research, design and installation, media production and digital development, and exhibition policymaking for the institution. His exhibition projects there have won the Excellence in Exhibitions award from the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and several of AAM’s MUSE awards for digital and media work, as well as accolades from the American Association for State and Local History, the Museum Association of New York, and Communication Arts. He previously managed exhibition projects for the Washington DC–based design firm Gallagher & Associates, consulting for a variety of cultural centers to create new or refresh outmoded exhibitions including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and National Postal Museum in our nation’s capital, the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center in Pennsylvania, the Museum at Bethel Woods in New York, the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Mississippi, the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts, the Jewish Museum Milwaukee in Wisconsin, and the Normandy American Cemetery Visitor Center in France.
Ian completed his undergraduate studies in anthropology at Northwestern University and earned his master’s degree in anthropology at The George Washington University with a focus on the representation of non-Western arts in Western museums and galleries. He teaches Exhibition Planning and Design in the Museum Studies graduate program at New York University, and he is a frequent guest lecturer at design and museum studies programs on museum professional practices, exhibition development and design, community engagement, project management, and displaying traumatic history.
Ian serves on the board of the National Association for Museum Exhibition (NAME) and is the Managing Editor for Exhibition, a journal of exhibition theory and practice for museum professionals published by NAME and AAM. He is also a grant reviewer for the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Arts, a peer reviewer for AAM’s Museum Assessment Program, and a former member of AAM’s National Program Committee.
