The Hierarchy of Building Numbering

Building numbering and naming is a core skill of the environmental graphic designer. Gladys R. Brenner, of AB Design, Inc., Richmond, VA, will explore how a hierarchy of color, symbols, numbers, and messages organizes a building and aids in wayfinding. Session topics will include using numbers, letters, number/letter derivatives, and dots and dashes; room naming and numbering; numbering between floors; color-coding and room numbering; numbering for multiple building systems; elevator egress and ADA limitations; sample room numbering systems for projects of different types and sizes; room numbering and the ADA; and elevator floor numbering and safety numbering.
