General Glass International (Secaucus, N.J.) applied its Alice® printing technology to create a unique design statement in the bathrooms at the recently opened Envoy Hotel in Boston's Seaport District.
Project architect ADD Inc. / Group One Partners, Inc., wanted to create variations of natural lighting and privacy in the bathroom without losing functionality or visibility on the bathroom doors, says Stephen Balik, GGI's director of architectural sales. Their idea was to recreate historical maps of Boston on the glass.
GGI achieved the desired vision through custom color matching on the printed maps and careful control of opacity, along with privacy banding printed digitally on the shower doors.
Richard Balik, GGI executive vice president, says that several rounds of sampling were required to get the exact colors and opacities correct. In addition, the layout of each of the hotel's 136 bathrooms is different, "so we treated each of them as individual projects to keep track of sizes and ensure a smooth installation."
The Envoy Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection by Marriott, is located at 70 Sleeper Street, Boston.
