Read Time: 2 minutes

This year, 2022, marks the first anniversary of SEGD’s student chapter at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). As part of the collaborationSEGD partnered with DAAP to present the first-ever DAAPworks SEGD Awards.

SEGD is committed to fostering the growth of the next generation of designers at the student level as they prepare to enter into and propel the profession forward. To this end, the DAAPworks SEGD Awards recognize student members of SEGD at DAAP who have demonstrated excellence in the field of experiential design through their senior capstone project.

A faculty panel comprised of Reneé Seward (Associate Professor, Communication Design, DAAP), Muhammad Rahman (Assistant Professor, Communication Design, DAAP) and Oscar Fernández (Associate Professor Emeritus, School of Design, DAAP) determined the four honorable mentions and one scholarship winner.

And the winner is … (drumroll, please!) … Brooke Baker, an undergrad in DAAP’s School of Architecture and Interior Design. Brooke received the SEGD DAAP Excellence Award for her capstone project “The Sleep Sanctuary.”

In addition to awarding the top honor, the faculty panel also recognized four students with Honorable Mentions: Helen Kemper (School of Design), Amelia Arnold (School of Architecture and Interior Design), Margeaux Lim (School of Art), and Gabe Rhoads (School of Planning). The DAAPworks SEGD Awards were presented on April 26 during the Opening Night of DAAP’s capstone show. Loran Sanvido, Student President of SEGD’s DAAP Chapter, officially awarded the students with their prizes. Franck Mercurio, SEGD’s Senior Writer & Editor, served as SEGD’s representative at the event.

Cybelle Jones, CEO of SEGD, hopes to use the DAAPworks SEGD Awards as a model for other student chapters.

“SEGD’s involvement with undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary design programs elevates the importance of experience design,” says Cybelle. “It also allows us to champion the next generation of designers who are focussed on enhancing the human condition.
