SEGD Announces Educational Programming for 2017 Conference
WASHINGTON—Convening in Miami, June 8–10, the 2017 SEGD Conference Experience Miamiwill bring top designers and local experts together for an inspirational three-day event. Featuring hands-on workshops and charrettes, design tours, NEXPO floor, networking socials and thought leadership sessions, the conference will explore innovation, technology and the future of experiential graphic design.
Alongside international design legend Lance Wyman, leaders from local organizations including the University of Miami, CityBIOM, Gensler, CEEK VR, Florida International University, MONAD Studio, Coral Morphologic and New World Symphony will contribute to the conference, Miami-style.
This year’s general sessions will include:
- The Visual Diaries: A Design Process with Lance Wyman, FSEGD,Lance Wyman Ltd.
- The Dream of a City: The Story of Serena Del Mar with Sean Scensor, Moshe Safdie Architects
- Responding to Change: Sea-Level Rise and the Impact on Design with Dr. Harold Wanless, University of Miami; introduction and moderation by Ana Benatuil, CityBIOM/Gensler
- Miami Underline: Creating a New Urban Landscape with Isabel Castilla, James Corner Field Operations; and Hamish Smyth, Standards Manual
- Visionary Territories: Entrepreneurship and Innovation with Mary Spio, CEEK VR
The conference will feature the return of the popular Design Improv session—a charrette designed to induce laughter and outside-the-box thinking and making—led by Ben Whitehouse of Two Twelve.
Design Improv(e): Give Back—with Linda Feinberg of Linda Feinberg Design and Kenneth Rasco of Gensler—will give attendees an opportunity to give back to the Miami community by creating a donor wall and building signage for the Lotus Endowment Fund’s Lotus Village, a non-profit focused on providing shelter and support services to over 500 homeless women, youth and children in Greater Miami.
Lucy Holmes and Alex Wood from Holmes Wood will lead attendees in a roundtable dialogue on ownership transitions; Siggi Bachmann of Contexto/New World Symphony and Justin Molloy with SEGD will present Design Thinking: User-Centric Innovation; and attendees can participate in an accessibility and code roundtable with Steven Raniszewski of Century Sign Builders, Ken Ethridge of ASI Sign Systems and Teresa Cox of APCO.
Another signature element of the SEGD Conference, local tourswill get attendees out of the conference room and into the city to focus on recent high-profile experiential design projects. The tours on June 8 will include the following: Miami Beach Art Deco Experience, Wolfsonian Museum Experience, New World Symphony Architectural Experience and FIU Miami Beach Urban Studios Innovation Experience. A slate of Premium and Ultra-Premium tours (at an additional cost) will also be available.
The conference will be preceded on June 7 by the one-day SEGD Academic Summit.During the summit, design educators, researchers, students and practitioners will gather to hear presentations from original peer-reviewed design and user research related to experiential graphic design.
On June 10, the SEGD community will send off the conference, celebrating excellence in experiential graphic design by saluting the winners of the 2017 SEGD Global Design Awards.
