Deborah Beardslee is a designer, artist and associate professor in the School of Design at RIT. Her teaching focuses on design process and methodology, verbal and visual concept development, systems thinking, environmental graphic design and cross-disciplinary problem solving and collaboration. Professor Beardslee taught at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Department of Communication Arts and Design for two years prior to joining the faculty at RIT. Across her career she has worked and/or studied with Ben Day, Rob Carter, Meredith Davis, Phil Meggs, John DeMao and Victor Papanek.
TEACHING & ADMINISTRATION
Her time at RIT teaching graduate and undergraduate graphic design and cross-disciplinary design courses includes 15 years of coordinating the former Graphic Design MFA Program and several years as a co-chair of the undergraduate Graphic Design BFA Program. She has been a member of the faculty advisory group for the RIT Vignelli Center for Design Studies since its inception, and currently serves on the curriculum development group for a Design Studies masters degree proposal affiliated with the Vignelli Center.
As further evidence of her commitment to cross-disciplinary collaboration, Deborah Beardslee has participated as a search committee member and faculty guest participant/critic in RIT's College of Business, devised and facilitated concept generation workshops for 5th year students in the College of Engineering, and delivers a presentation on the relevance and application of design thinking and cross-disciplinary methods and methodologies in "The College Teacher" graduate course
Across her career Deborah Beardslee has worked on many collaborative projects, been an invited guest speaker at other universities in the USA and Austria, and delivered juried presentations at national and international design and cross-disciplinary conferences sponsored by organizations such as SEGD, IVLA, SECAC, the School of Visual Arts, Common Ground and the Toronto Design Exchange. Her lectures and presentations include a majority of original photography and incorporate relevant examples and contexts collected from her ongoing travel and investigation.
