David Osborne is the Founder of Graphia Brands in Hong Kong.
Founder and Chairman of gB, David Osborne continually seeks better ways to improve the discipline of environmental graphics. He actually hates signs. David Osborne introduced the idea of wayfinding not as signage design but as experience design, and he continually encourages his five design teams to find better, more intuitive ways to guide and orient people in the built environment. He holds a PhD from Coventry University in England and his continued research area is consumer behavior in the built environment.
Graphia Brands (gB) design wayfinding systems; for theme parks, for retail malls, for office complexes, residential, hotels...we design fun and funky (and sometimes cool and corporate) signage that helps people know where they are and gets them to where they want to go. And, of course, makes the buildings look super-cool. Graphia Brands have a wide range of clients across Asia, with over 350 projects completed in China for clients that include all of the major developers and property groups such as Marriott International, Wynn Hotels, Walt Disney, Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Swire Properties, Hutchison Whampoa Properties Limited, Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. and many more.
His personal research interests are centred on consumer culture theory and its relationship with identities of place, and the application of qualitative methodologies – particularly grounded theory – in the investigations of the people-place dynamic. His research work focuses on understanding the development and use of place meaning in the built environment, both in a broad social context and in the more focused context of commercial consumption.
Over the past seven years he has focused on integrating academic theory with professional practice; first to propose a restructuring of the design process as it relates to the design of the built environment, and, second, to reassess the skill sets currently considered appropriate in the education of young designers.
Dr. David Osborne holds a PhD from the University of Coventry, England. He was responsible for designing the environmental graphics course for the HK Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, and for running the course for four years (2001-2005). Heserved as external examiner for the University Teknologi MARA Faculty of Art and Design in Malaysia for six years, and is currently Visiting Professor at UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is a member of the editorial board of the Asian Journal on Environment-Behaviour Studies (ajE-Bs) and the Journal of ASIAN Behavioural Studies (jABs).
David Osborne builds (slowly) vintage motorcycles and plays (badly) blues guitar and ukulele. He has possibly the largest private collection of ukuleles in Hong Kong. Apart from that he's almost normal.
