Charter Hall Corporate Headquarters

Flexible Dimensions

Frost*collective creates sophisticated environmental graphics for an activity-based workplace.

When it moved into new corporate headquarters recently, Charter Hall, one of Australia's largest managers of office, retail, and industrial properties, also made the move to an activity-based working model. BVN Architects made it happen with an open-plan, transparent, and connected office space at 1 Martin Place in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District. Urbanite, Frost*collective’s environmental design practice, was commissioned to highlight Charter Hall’s sophisticated and “edgy” personality through environmental graphics and signage in the new space.

The Urbanite team was briefed to build on BVN’s “industrial sophistication” theme, developing graphic elements that would create a unique sense of place and enliven the work world for Charter Hall’s 300 employees and their guests.

The Urbanite team drew on a range of material and graphics to enliven the town hall-like space. They leveraged the vernacular of Charter Hall’s dimensional cube logo as a foundation for the graphic approach, to connect all touch points. A grid was developed around the idea of multiples, reflecting a diverse workforce that brings the right mix of ingredients to Charter Hall. Underpinning these multiple elements is a grid created from the forms of the brand mark.

The grid and facets were explored across ceiling frescoes, stair features, wall installations, and other elements designed to activate the space. In the reception area, a light installation developed in partnership with Arup creates a sculptural point of interest and interprets the brand identity.

Formerly Frost*, the Sydney-based agency recently reorganized its practice under the umbrella of Frost*collective. Frost* Design offers strategy, design, and communications to create brands that contribute to better business, communities, cities and beyond. The Nest is a digital agency that specializes in innovative and creative approaches to strategy, design, and technology. Urbanite is the collective’s branded environments studio.
