Phoenix, AZ Blog

Please join us for an evening with Jan Lorenc, founder of Lorenc + Yoo Design.

Jan Lorenc will present his insight after more than 40 years in the field and provide an open forum for discussion as we explore connections between a range of design disciplines.

Drinks and snacks will be provided. The event is free for current SEGD members, $5 fee for non-members.

Jan Lorenc established Lorenc+Yoo Design in 1978 in Chicago. Previously, he designed the logo and signage guidelines for Target Stores, which are used to this day. The company initially undertook industrial design projects, and later began work on large scale signage programs. In the mid-1990s, the firm moved into exhibits, interiors, and architecture. The firm has worked in Korea, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, India, and Japan. Currently, half of their work is in China where it creates the vision and design for brand new towns.

Jan Lorenc was made a fellow of SEGD in 2017.

What has the chapter been up to?

What an exciting month for the Phoenix SEGD chapter! First, the chairs and a few members traveled to Austin for the annual Conference Experience. There we had the chance to tour Austin, hear from inspiring speakers, visit the NEXPO and connect with new and familiar faces. This conference is something we always look forward to and this year did not disappoint! We left feeling motivated, recharged and full from all of the delicious BBQ. We hope all of the Phoenix members will have the opportunity to attend the conference and if you have questions, please reach out to the chapter chairs. Can’t wait for summer 2020 in Portland, Oregon!

Once returning home from the Conference Experience, the chapter held a tour at Graham’s Neon in Mesa, led by owner Larry Graham. Larry started his business in 1987 in his garage and has been illuminating the valley for over 30 years. He’s kind of a big deal when it comes to neon signs and he and his team are known for repairing the famous Starlite Motel “Diving Lady” located in Mesa. During our tour, he showed us everything from design to fabrication and even let some of us get hands on experience by bending tubes of glass over fire. We had the best time exploring his shop and not only did we get to see how signs are made, but Larry let us know that neon is not a dying art! The tour was followed by a little adventure in downtown Mesa where we explored new places such as Worth Takeaway and Cider Corps.

We hope everyone is having a good summer and with June coming to an end, make sure keep an eye out for events happening in July!

The Neon Museum - Las Vegas

For over a century, neon has been illuminating signs all over the world.

Today, neon signs are not only hanging in storefront windows but seen in the trendiest spots with influencers lining up to get the perfect image to post on social media, or as the cool kids say, “doin’ it for the gram.”

Is what we see today actually neon, or the cheaper copycat, colored LED? Is traditional neon signage production becoming an uncommon craft?

Next month, the Phoenix chapter will tour a local neon sign fabricator located in Mesa. There we will see how neon signs are made and talk to true craftsmen about how they are creating more than signs and prove that nothing can replicate the aesthetic and classic glow of real neon.

Afterwards we will explore downtown Mesa and enjoy some food and drinks at Worth, Oro Brewery and Cider Corps – for anyone unable to join the tour feel free to meet the group afterwards on Main Street.
