The Colorado Law Library hosts SEGD Denver and AIGA Colorado for a Rare Book Salon

This event was hosted by SEGD Denver and AIGA Colorado at the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Building in Downtown Denver, home to the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Court of Appeals and a number of other judicial bodies. This building also houses the Colorado Supreme Court library which holds a large collection of very rare, old and unique books and publications. The building is also architecturally significant for its collection of art, artifacts and design. The building was designed with a towering atrium and glass dome that looks directly at the Colorado State Capitol, a deliberate juxtaposition highlighting the concept of checks and balances within the 3 branches of Colorado’s government, the judiciary, the legislature and the executive branch. This event included a tour of the building, as well as a special guided visit to the Law Library, where librarians, historians and other judicial staff guided the attendees through some of the rarest books in the collection.

ArtHouse Design generously offered to sponsored this event and Polly Brock, the Clerk of the Court of Appeals helped set this up, as her husband, Marty Gregg, is the principal of ArtHouse.

The Colorado Court of Appeals Law Librarian spoke occasionally throughout the hour and a half tour and Rare Book Salon highlighting major stories and providing context for the most influential law books. A general interest in history and typography created an exciting atmosphere within the Law Library. Being able to touch and take pictures of the books really provided a memorable experience for each guest.

After learning from the Law Librarian about some of the books on the tables, each person had the opportunity to flip through the books and really appreciate each detail of the typography, placement, and content. Everyone left that evening happy with new knowledge about Colorado history within our Law Library.

The Colorado Court of Appeals Law Library is excited to host an after-hours tour of select legal materials for members of AIGA Colorado & SEGD.

They will display, discuss, and take questions about an array of rare and otherwise significant publications circa. 1580 to the present. This array will be displayed not only chronologically, but also by publication type: to wit, old books, pocket books, scrap books, work books, circulars, directories, ephemera, flyers, letters, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, pamphlets, and other surviving print, some hand-written. The publications will represent federal, state, territorial, and local jurisdictions. Some will be pretty, some will be odd, others will be ugly; all will be fascinating when placed into historical perspective. In each instance, we will comment on one or more of the following: paper, binding, font, language, typeset, size, intended use, and condition.

As an added value for this event, the Clerk of the Court will be happy to lead a tour of the art and finishes of the building to anybody that wants to participate, prior to the rare book salon. Those who are interested need to be in the building lobby at 4:45pm sharp to go through security.

To join the fun, please enter on the 14th Avenue side of our building (between Lincoln and Broadway). And for maximum enjoyment, please be prompt.

The closest parking is the on-street meters along Lincoln and Broadway. There is an outdoor surface lot on 13th and Logan just up the hill from our building, the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Courthouse. And, in the case of inclement weather, or a desire to park under cover for any reason, we recommend the Art Museum garage off 12th Avenue.

The event centered on best practices for implementing digital signage programs and featured speakers who’s expertise ranged from design to fabrication to providing content. Marty Gregg, principal of ArtHouse Design joined Jim Zazenski, president of Boyd Sign Systems and David Levin, president and CEO of Four Winds Interactive, each speaking to their unique point of view and associated best practices. SEGD Denver chapter chair Zach Kotel emceed the event and led the panel discussion, as well as the audience question and answer period.

The panel discussed how important it is to consider the holistic, functional and aesthetic goals of a project through collaboration to ensure that every discipline involved in implementing a digital signage program is effective in providing creative solutions. The speakers shared case studies including Denver's 14th Street Redevelopment, Denver's 16th Street Mall Interactive Kiosks, One World Trade Center and the Oculus in New York City and work for Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Through careful consideration of branding, signage design, wayfinding and content management, these projects were able to seamlessly and elegantly incorporate digital signage into the overall package for maximum impact.
