Please join us next Wednesday September 23rd as we welcome our new co-chair, Jessica Grant and delve into one of her favorite design topics, typography design! Typography is at the core of the work we do and is something we are constantly addressing in our projects. Whether we're selecting an appropriate typeface or testing sizes for legibility, considerations like these are imperative to a successful project outcome. And of course, many of us just love typography for the sake of admiring beautiful letterforms.
To get to the root of typography design, we wanted to bring in some experts to talk about their process of designing typography. We've invited Dyana Weissman, David Ross, and Eben Sorkin to share stories of how they became type designers, show some of their work and give a virtual tour of their studios. We will also leave some time for a Q&A.
For over 15 years, Dyana Weissman has been working with clients across various industries such as Comedy Central, Disney, Ford, the MoMA, and The Washington Post. Currently, she is the Custom Type Director at Type Network, where she manages and creates large families in traditional static and variable font formats. Previously, she was Senior Custom Designer at The Font Bureau. Her approach to work is influenced by humanity itself: She aims to make genuine connections with clients and believes that the most memorable designs are endearingly imperfect. She stretches her other creative muscles by writing for Typographica and Alphabettes, taking photographs, and promoting independent film. She stretches her literal muscles by hiking as often as she can.
David Jonathan Ross
David draws letters of all shapes and sizes for custom and retail typeface designs. A native of Los Angeles, He began drawing typefaces at Hampshire College and joined The Font Bureau in 2007 where he honed his bézier-wrangling skills. Now he lives in the woods of Western Massachusetts and publishes his typeface designs at his own foundry, DJR, as well as working on projects with Type Network and developing unusual display faces for his Font of the Month Club.
Eben is a type designer and art director living in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, USA. His company is Sorkin Type Co. He is also the Art Director and a type designer for Darden Studio in Brooklyn. He has an MA degree in type design from the University of Reading in the UK. Eben is most known for his widely-used font family Merriweather. He also art directed the expansion of Joshua Darden's typeface Halsey which was renamed Halyard. He designed it in collaboration with Josh and Lucas Sharp. Currently, the unconventional expansion of the family Birra is underway. He is also pushing to release a new web-based tool for testing visual quality in fonts called EQX. This project is Google-funded libre software and is free to use or modify.
