While there are no actual clams nor will we smoke out the venue, this speaker series stews the pot of design leaders, design thinkers, and design makers, who all got their start right here in Colorado.

Join us and our mile high designers, Nick Spriggs (Design and Branding Partner at Vector), Willie Petersen (Advertising/Editorial Photographer), and Sara Blette (Founder of Make My Notebook), as they take us on an inspirational journey that explores the pathways, the work, the challenges, and the opportunities of their career growth and success.

Speakers

Nick Spriggs | Vector Media Group, Partner Design and Branding

Nick is responsible for the creative vision of all design projects at Vector Media Group. He is driven by the desire to bring design thinking to his clients’ needs and problems to create ownable, intuitive and beautiful solutions that speak directly to his clients’ audiences. His award winning work spans the gamut from major app and website redesign initiatives for some of the world’s largest consulting groups, luxury hotels, and law firms, as well as brand and product experiences for City and State agencies, educational institutions, start-ups and world-leading photographers.

Originally from Australia, Nick first moved to Colorado to study at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. After graduating in 2003 Nick moved to New York City and worked his way up through various agencies before becoming a Partner at Vector Media Group in 2014.http://www.vectormediagroup.com

Willie Petersen  |  Willie Petersen Creative, Founder
Willie Petersen is an award-winning commercial photographer based in Denver, Colorado. He worked as an art director in New York City for a decade before discovering his real passion in photography. Willie now works with many agencies, magazines and companies to help bring their visions to life. http://www.williepetersenphoto.com

Sara Blette  |  Make My Notebook, Founder
Dreams don’t happen unless you get them out of your head and onto paper. Or at least that’s what Sara Blette, interior designer, product developer, art director, super mom, and owner of Make My Notebook, discovered. Finding pleasure in the simplicity and beauty of paper was easy for this avid writer, but finding the perfect book to collect all her musings, drawings and notes proved difficult. “There was a lack of high quality, eco-friendly, handmade notebooks on the market. I knew that there had to be others like me that were passionate about paper- and it really sparked something inside of me.”http://www.makemynotebook.com

Thank you to all who were able to join us for the Meet the Dark Side event. Design organizations across Denver came together for a very special night of networking and fun!

When I first arrived to the event, it was great to see a line out the door of all the people who were waiting to get their drink tickets and bingo cards for the event. The first 150 to the door received 2 free drink tickets. Participants were also given bingo cards that contained each of the organizations that participated in the event. To get a square marked off, you had to obtain the signature from someone who was a member of that group. People who got bingos or blackouts on their cards were given prizes at the end of the evening.

Over 250 people showed for the event. We received great feedback from people who attended the event who said they were excited about having this opportunity to network and connect with so many people from the Denver design community.

This hipster pizza place in Denver’s Lower Downtown neighborhood serves up a gourmet mixture of pizzas, salads and hors d’oeuvres. A sign that places a modern twist on the classic, neon pizza-place sign is certainly appropriate. Gordon Sign’s Kreg Lyles designed the program using CorelDRAW X6 and Trimble SketchUp software. The 3-D sign, which Marc Sund fabricated, comprises an aluminum skin, illuminated with reverse-pan channel letters, that’s brightened by SloanLED single-line LED modules set to pivot from side to side to create a shape-shifting illusion as the viewer passes by. The shop cut metal and plastic components on its Computerized Cutters Accu-Cut XPS router, and painted them with Matthews fire-red and gloss-black, acrylic-polyurethane coatings.

Thank you to all who were able to join us for our Madhatter Membership Mixer. Design organizations across Denver including SEGD, AIGA, IDSA, ASID, ADCD, AIA, and the Denver Architectural Foundation came together for a very special night of networking and fun!

Appetizers and a specialty "Drink Me" cocktail were provided at the event. There was also a fully costumed Madhatter that helped to stir networking and socializing during the event.

Logos of the design organizations were printed on stickers. Participants were given stickers of the organization they represented and were to give their sticker to the people they met during the night. Stickers were to be collected on a Madhatter Hat you could make at the craft table. People who had the most stickers or the best hats were given prizes at the end of the evening. SEGD member and Chapter Chair Liaison George Lim won a prize for best hat while SEGD member and designer Matthew DeLade of Tangram Design received a prize for the collection of stickers on his hat.

Over 100 people RSVP'd for the event. Although a lovely torrential rainstorm prohibited some from coming, many who RSVP'd were able to make it. We received great feedback from people who attended the event who said they were excited about having this opportunity to network and connect with so many people from the Denver design community.

Network with members of Denver’s various design organizations whose disciplines include EGD, industrial design, web, mobile apps, architecture, print and more!

As designers, we wear a lot of hats...
With the ever changing trends of design, technology, and the demands of our clients, we often find ourselves wearing a lot of different hats to keep our projects going. One moment you may be a designer or art director and the next you're a financial advisor, photographer, copy writer, site manager, and many other titles that were totally not in your original job description.

At the Membership Madhatter Mixer, our goal is to bring different creative organizations and disciplines together to provide networking opportunities that create awareness and connections between each other's respective design and industry practices. Who knows? You might find people in the community that may be willing to help take on some of those hats that you never thought you’d be caught dead wearing.

On March 19, 2015, SEGD Denver Chapter Chairs George Lim and Angela Serravo went to the Metropolitan State University of Denver and held a presentation for students in the university's Communication Design program. They provided an introduction to the world of EGD and promoted the benefits of becoming a student member with SEGD.

Thank you to all who joined us for the Speaker Series event with Ken Carbone! We had an incredible turn out of nearly 100 attendees. Ken engaged us in a highly visual presentation that demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit and drive that has led to the success of projects ranging from start-ups to legendary institutions.

After the presentation and Q&A, a raffle was held where attendees could win Ken’s book, "Dialog": What Makes a Great Design Partnership". The book explores over three decades of work from the Carbone Smolan Agency and reveals the collaborative ethos that has resulted in a stunning array of designs for a world-class clientele.

Thank you to AIGA for collaborating with SEGD on this event. Also, a special thanks to our sponsors Boyd Sign Systems and Tangram Design. It is with the kind contributions of our sponsors that we are able to help bring events like this to our community. Thank you for your support!

Design: An Entrepreneur's Loaded Dice

Start-ups are all the rage, but for every Warby Parker, GoPro or Uber success, there are thousands of “Friendster” gravestones out there. How does today’s entrepreneur balance risk and rewards? What defines a successful brand? Why is design the key to winning?

At twenty-five, Ken Carbone chose to “roll the dice” and started a design business in New York City. Now almost forty years later that same entrepreneurial spirit drives the Carbone Smolan Agency, resulting in a world class clientele ranging from start-ups to legendary institutions. Ken’s highly visual presentation reveals the fundamentals: what it takes for designers and businesses to collaborate, sustain success, and have fun doing it every single day.

Thank you to all who joined us for the Sign Painter’s Movie Night with Mark Oatis last week! We had an incredible turn out of nearly 100 attendees. Mark Oatis opened the evening with an engaging and insightful talk that primed us all for the evening’s screening of the Sign Painters movie. We received comments from some of our guests via our online survey that I feel sum up the night perfectly:

"Mark Oatis' presentation was sterling. He's a warm, humorous and articulate spokesman for the sign and design industry. His down to earth experience coupled with his dynamic understanding of design are an inspiration. He set up the event perfectly and I don't think the film would have had quite the same impact without him putting things in proper context.”

"I really appreciated the unique nature of this event. For me, the combination of Mark’s presentation, the film itself, and time to visit made for an evening well-spent.”

Thank you to our sponsor YESCO and to all your staff who helped to organize and hold this amazing event. Your shop provided a welcoming environment for our guests and the hot dogs and popcorn were delicious, making for a great movie experience.

Special thanks to Herm Medina of YESCO. As part of our local SEGD Planning Committee, Herm was the prime organizer for this event. We appreciate all the time and effort Herm provided to make this event so successful.

And last but certainly not least, thank you to Mark Oatis. Coupled with his amazing design, signage, and industry experience, Mark is just simply a wonderful person. Thank you Mark for sharing your life and experiences with us you created a wonderful night and experience for us all!

SEGD Denver and YESCO welcome you to join us for Movie Night with Mark Oatis!

Mark Oatis, the Creative Director at YESCO in Las Vegas, and one of the stars in the Sign Painters movie has come to town to share with us his sign painting and industry experience.

Movie Synopsis
There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

The documentary by filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.

November 22, 2013

The Denver Chapter held its holiday party this year at Ink Lounge Creative. Ink Lounge is a small multidisciplinary creative studio that holds workshops that teach people how to screen print. The event was open to members, non-members, and students. With 20 attendees, we spent 2.5 hours getting our hands dirty and learning the screen printing process.

Participants screen printed tshirts and had the opportunity to print their own art onto the tshirt. They were supplied 1 shirt by Tangram Design and were able to bring additional fabric items of their own to print onto. Appetizers, holiday cookies, and drinks were provided by Tangram while Yesco graciously supplied beer for the guests.

October 17, 2013

We had a great turn out of over 30 attendees which included designers, fabricators, students, and AIGA and ADCD members. Special thanks to Marty, Megan, Beth, Chuck and Clara of Arthouse Design, not only for their generous hospitality, but also for the candid open dialogue and thoughtful insights they shared about their design process and the company.

From conception to fabrication, Arthouse Design demonstrated their process of how the 14th Street wayfinding monuments in Downtown Denver were brought to life, sharing highlights and lessons learned. They also gave great advise to students for the types of things they look for when interviewing new hires. The tour of their open office space showcased how the design process happens in this creative environment. Participants of the studio tour also had time to connect and network!
