Multi-award-winning graphic and three-dimensional environmental designer, Carlo Giannasca, is Australian Design Radio’s latest guest!
Giannasca is the Head of Urbanite, Design Director and one of the founder/owners of Frost*collective. On top of that, he is the joint chair of SEGD's Sydney chapter. In this episode, ADR charts his introduction to design, from drawing on his bedroom walls to hassling Garry Emery into giving him his first job. With over 30 years of experience, Giannasca has seen the industry dramatically change in Australia; ADR looks at this but also explores why he made the move from traditional graphic design to environments.
“I was always drawing as a kid—including all over the walls. I remember always drawing, especially whenever my aunts and uncles would visit, I'd bring a sketch pad along and draw everything I could. It was just something that has been part of my DNA I guess," describes Giannasca. "I think I was really influenced also when we went to Italy when I was 10 years old and I remember going to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel and seeing all that art and architecture; so foreign to me as an Aussie kid. It was really quite a defining moment for me; it was the first time I really saw the connection between art and place.”
