BrandCulture Announces the Opening of The Canopy

BrandCulture’s branding & wayfinding designs welcome visitors to The Canopy

It’s hard to believe The Canopy in Sydney was once an unsightly car park. Today, this vibrant rooftop village – featuring branding and wayfinding by BrandCulture – is the new heart of its neighborhood in Lane Cove.

Since 2018, Sydney studio BrandCulture has been working with Lane Cove Council to help bring The Canopy to life – a development that transforms Rosenthal Avenue Car Park into a multi-layered retail precinct and community space.

BrandCulture helped to inform The Canopy’s naming, brand, and wayfinding strategies. In consultation with the community, they agreed ‘The Canopy’ was the perfect name to reflect the layers of Lane Cove. Just as a canopy creates a welcoming shelter within a forest, The Canopy is a leafy sanctuary with multiple layers and uses.

BrandCulture’s branding and wayfinding designs can now be found throughout the development, heralding its arrival as Lane Cove’s newest meeting place.

Bright layered colors play an important role in The Canopy’s branding and are inspired by research into local landscapes. Dark blue signifies Lane Cove River; yellow depicts local sandstone; green symbolizes local parklands; purple represents urban areas; while light blue and white depict the sky and clouds.

At the top of The Canopy, the brand identity is embedded into the pavement, creating a sense of address. Hidden beneath are 500 car spaces across four levels, with each level distinguished by The Canopy’s brand colors to improve orientation. From the moment visitors see the colors and curves of The Canopy’s branding, they'll know they have arrived.

BrandCulture worked closely with ADCO Constructions and architects Scott Carver to create an elegant wayfinding system that is beautifully embedded into the built environment. Signs are made of black and weathered metal, echoing the architectural palette. Curved lines and edges mirror The Canopy’s branding, creating a sense of belonging.

Led by Lane Cove Council, the project was a collaborative process involving the local community, Scott Carver, ADCO Constructions, and BrandCulture. The first stage of The Canopy opened on 13 June 2020, while the dining precinct is yet to come later this year.
