SEGD’s San Francisco chapter hosted 27 students from the Department of Design at the University of California, Davis, for a full day of studio tours October 23. The goal was to give students the opportunity to experience the diversity of careers in environmental graphic design.
Working with Professor Tim McNeil,SEGD San Francisco chapter members coordinated transportation for the three-hour drive to and from Davis, visits to six of the top EGD firms in downtown San Francisco, guided tours to each venue, and breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day. Each tour was about 20 to 30 minutes. In addition to the 27 design undergraduates attending, two graduate student assistants and Professor McNeil made the trip.
Participating studios were Kate Keating Associates, Gensler, Media Objectives at VDTA, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Rapt Studio, and Volume Inc.
The venues were chosen to demonstrate the full spectrum of EGD practices, ranging in expertise from exhibition design to corporate environments, urban wayfinding, and large-scale architectural graphics.
“Six EGD studios in almost the same number of hours was an amazing experience for the students and really showed them the talent, range, and creative energy of the profession,” says McNeil. “The group left feeling inspired--with their brains full and with a better understanding of the working environment."
Each studio approached the tour differently. Some opted simply for an open Q&A, while others focused on the design process or key projects. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with principals and experienced designers and ask them candid questions.
Organizers raffled off three SEGD memberships to students as well as a copy of the EGD book You Are Here, and gave away SEGD T-shirts, buttons, and eg magazines.
Student attendees were Gabriela Araiza, Chaitra Bangalore, Antonieta Castillo Carpio, Kathy Chang, Tiffany Choi, Michelle Colato-Ochoa, Rousseau Gleitsman, Dulce Gonzalez, Joshua Hong, Karyn Kershaw, Raiyan Khan, Katherine Lau, Lillian Liu, Bikesh Maharjan, Samantha Manning, Michelle Marciel, Kaitlyn Paik, Christina Phan, Nima Rahni, Jenny Ruedy, Madeleine Salem, Nicole Schneider, Jaimie Tulao, Michelle Vella, Michael Villas, Victoria Yuen-Ruan.
