Perkins + Will’s Atlanta Branded Environments team hosted the SEGD Wayfinding Photo Challenge for attendees of the 2014 SEGD Conference. It was a great way to add even more fun to the conference and explore the power of social media as a tool for placemaking and economic development.
More and more, we are seeing how regular citizens with camera-enabled smartphones can help shape the future of a city’s brand. Our goal was to provide further evidence of this changing power structure in the field of design.
We also wanted to demonstrate how a firm like Perkins+Will can play a role in generating, curating, and translating citizen-sourced insights for the benefit of a city’s marketing and economic development efforts. We believe that as we lead the industry by engaging at the community level, the outcomes will be a smarter, more focused, and visitor-attuned branding effort for Atlanta that will drive more travel, tourism, and corporate relocation to the city.
Participants were asked to submit up to five images taken in Atlanta during the conference--anything from their arrival at the airport to their experience on conference walking tours. They were encouraged to use their phones, tablets, or cameras to capture the iconography, signage, and public spaces/environments that best reflected their impressions of Atlanta’s brand as a city.
Judges for the SEGD Wayfinding Challenge were from the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Convention Visitors Bureau, and Savannah College of Art and Design. By participating in the Wayfinding Challenge, these civic leaders got the chance to see how visitor-attuned branding efforts for the city can help drive more travel, tourism, and corporate relocation.
Wayfinding Challenge winners were:
People's Choice: Steve Ray Gurule (Century Sign Builders) for his entry entitled Atlanta Signage Branding
Judge's Choice: Christopher Smith (Color-Ad Signs and Exhibits) for his entry called #VisionisATL
In a city shaped by historical, geographic, and cultural convergence, it is fitting that contest entries encompass Atlanta images contextually rich with placemaking, wayshowing, and wayfinding subjects. At Perkins+Will Branded Environments, we believe in the power of branded design to bridge boundaries, connect generations, and shape experiences, each with a special story to tell.
Thank you to participants for capturing and sharing the diverse spirit of Atlanta wayfinding through your unique lenses.
