2014 is developing well for SEGD as we continue to improve our programming quality, participation, and growing membership.
With our annual conference coming up in three weeks, you can feel the excitement building. Conference materials are rolling into the SEGD office. Steve Carlin, our 2014 Conference Chair, has put together an amazing program. Registrations keep coming in and have already approached the San Francisco levels. Designers are starting the stampede to Atlanta and looking at the activities planned, it’s no wonder!
The community is definitely ready for the annual SEGD gathering of the clan. And we think we know why! If you are sitting there thinking you’re too busy to attend, think again! This is your one chance, in what is likely to continue to be a very busy year, to get together with your colleagues, unwind, relax, get inspired, and get back to the grindstone feeling re-energized!

Membership is looking good and continuing to grow this year. We’re looking to grow about 15% and so far we’re on track to achieve our goal.
Attendance at the SEGD workshops and webinars has been strong this year. The Healthcare Innovations Workshop was well received and so was our Design+ collaboration with the International Sign Expo in Orlando. Still coming up this year, don’t miss the Exhibition & Experience Design Workshop(Aug. 21-22 in Washington, D.C), Airport & Transportation Workshop(Sep. 25-26 in Dallas), and Xlab(Nov. 6 in New York). There isn’t a member who is telling us they’re doing less digital work. Xlab is your place to learn about the cutting edge of Digital.
We continue to deliver our world-class eg magazine and from the beginning of this year, we have created a stronger integration between the magazine and the website. See the segd.orghome page for the latest hot (before- the-press) releases published new every week. We publish more images online than we can afford to put in the magazine for all articles. So you can dig deeper and see more on the website. Don’t miss the flood of great Member News added to the site daily, or the growing list of job opportunities, a clear sign of a steadily improving profession.
Our main goal with the website is to connect SEGD’s members, their firms, and their work to the more than 200,000 annual visitors to segd.org. This has been going really well so far. To help you understand the value segd.org is bringing to SEGD members this year, consider these quick facts from the first quarter of 2014. Since the beginning of the year:
- Member headshots got more than 9,000 views each.
- Member bios got between 160-400 views each.
- Firm logos got 41,500 views each.
- Firm listings got 400-700 views each.
- The site delivered 200-400% more referrals to members’ websites than in 2013.
- The Global Design Awards are receiving about 1,000-1,300 views each.
- Member bios are registering in the top-page Google search results for members, adding your professional association’s credibility to your web presence!
We have been working hard on the organization of the SEGD knowledge base and will be launching a new section of the site called Xplore at the conference in Atlanta.
Overall, our web activities have shown real, positive results, with traffic already up 15.5% year to date this year and growing due to our search optimization activities. Of course the goal is to make sure as many people find and learn about Experiential Graphic Design and the great work of the members as possible, so this is an ongoing activity for us.
The staff are energized and working hard to modernize SEGD, bringing greater benefits to its members. Look out for the staff at conference so you can learn more about what we are doing. We would love to hear from how you would like us to support your professional growth better.
