Happy New Year and welcome to 2021! We made it!

SEGD continues to adapt to this unprecedented time that we are all living through, ensuring we stay connected even when we are apart. We have many things to look forward to this year:

2021 Xlab “Convergence of Experimentation at the Intersection of Digital and Physical” which will be held virtually January 27-29
The invaluable 2021 “Business Series Summit” on March 11
2021 “Academic Summit Philadelphia” on June 9 and 2021 “Conference Experience Philadelphia” on June 10-12
“Wayfinding & Placemaking” event, August 4-5
“Exhibition & Experience” event, September 29-30
“Branded Environments” event, November 3-4

Our Chapter Chairs continue to raise the bar with inspirational events that can keep us connected regionally, as well. I encourage you to check out upcoming events on the SEGD website. My sincere appreciation to our incredibly dedicated Chapter Chair volunteers.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Chad Hutson of Leviathan and Hannah Anderson of Kolar Design, who are both stepping off the board, but certainly not away from the community.

As we move into 2021, we are thrilled to welcome two new individuals to the SEGD Board of Directors. It is my pleasure to announce the addition of Aki Carpenter and Dayton Schroeter, AIA.

Aki Carpenter

Aki Carpenter, Ralph Appelbaum Associates

Aki Carpenter is an Associate Designer and Creative Director at Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) she has worked on many high-profile projects including the Obama Presidential Center (Chicago, IL) and the National Museum of African American History and Culture (Washington, DC). Aki is also co-founder of BIPOC Directors Collective, an initiative fostering current and future directors of color within the design world and other creative fields. She is also a founding member and Creative Director for Ripple Effect, a New Orleans based environmental education start-up dedicated to K-12 education about socio-ecological issues of climate change.

Dayton Schroeter, AIA

Dayton Schroeter

Dayton is a Design Principal at SmithGroup and has advocated for design justice throughout his career. He currently serves as a  leader of SmithGroup’s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Leveraging his passion for design justice with authenticity and creativity, Dayton is currently leading antiracism efforts in several SmithGroup design projects including the proposed National Slavery Museum (located at the Lumpkin’s Slave Jail Site / Devil’s Half Acre in Richmond, VA) and a traveling installation titled Society’s Cage bringing awareness to the effects of racism on our society’s collective health, safety and welfare.

This is a time of evolution and growth for SEGD. Working together, SEGD CEO Cybelle Jones and the Board of Directors have outlined key strategic goals for 2021.

One of the goals that I am most proud of is the establishment of a commission charged with the advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice within our organization and the field of Experiential Graphic Design. The EDIJ Commission will serve as an advising group for SEGD programs, committees and staff. The commission will be spearheaded by Board Members Aki Carpenter and David Siegel.

We also have committed to the first phase of a website redevelopment effort which will include evaluating the content, messaging, and user experience of our SEGD website. We acknowledge this valuable resource is in need of a revamp and are committed to developing a fiscally responsible, phased implementation plan for a new website that is streamlined, user-friendly, and reflective of our community.

We also look to increase opportunities for members to build connections with the organization and each other by initiating new communication tools and formalizing more opportunities for members to volunteer. We are a community of 2000+ members with diverse backgrounds and skill sets who together can create change. We share these strategic goals with you to hold ourselves accountable and to roll up our sleeves to shape 2021 and beyond, together. Let’s get started!

I’m looking forward to connecting with old friends and new. Here’s to an exciting 2021!
