The first virtual SEGD Achievement Awards & Auction on June 24, 2020 was a big win for everyone involved, from our esteemed honorees to our auction bidders, and for the organization on the whole, bringing together 869 participants across two platforms.
There's something really special about an in-person SEGD event, and particularly the celebrations associated with our annual conference; they have a sort of genial authenticity that can only be created when people genuinely unite around a shared purpose and enjoy spending time together. It sounds a little bizarre to say, but the virtual 2020 SEGD Achievement Awards & Auction was warm, lively, and fun—just like a "real" SEGD event! And, importantly, the evening achieved its mission to celebrate and connect the community, while raising much-needed funds.
The evening began with pre-party rooms, named after the awards, each with a signature drink recipe enclosed: The Fellow's Suite/Classic Manhattan, The Arrows' Lounge/Cadillac Margarita,The Educator's Breakroom/Arnold Palmer, and The Distinguished Chapter Parlor/Spiced Sangria. At 7 PM, the awards ceremony—sponsored by DCL—began with introductions from CEO Cybelle Jones, President Anna Crider, and Awards Chair & Host, Chad Hutson, followed by descriptions of the honorees' contributions to the field and association, and virtual handoffs of the physical awards (complete with fun photo-ops!).
The awards and honorees are as follows:
- 2020 SEGD Fellow Award | Edwin Schlossberg, Principal at ESI Design, an NBBJ studio
- 2020 SEGD Arrow Award | 22MILES
- 2020 SEGD Chapter Chair Award | Zachary Kotel, Associate Design Director at ArtHouse Design
- 2020 SEGD Distinguished Member Award | Anthony Ferrara, Owner/Creative Director, Design Ferrara
- 2020 SEGD Educator Award | Joell Angel-Chumbley, Creative Director/Art Program Lead at Kolar Design

More on the Achievement Awards and 2020 winners Interspersed through the program were moments of comic relief, provided by Auction Chair, Annelle Stotz and Auctioneer, David Vanden-Eynden, FSEGD, whose evolving fabulous fashions, jokes and punny descriptions kept spirits high and wallets opening through the auction—sponsored by DESIGNTEX—which directly followed the awards presentation. Amazing items and experiences—many from generous individual donors and sponsors—were auctioned through an online portal, which is still open for donations (register to donate here, group 1633). Experiences provided by multi-talented members ranged from Tai Chi lessons, to classes on training your dog, to producing your own podcast.
The funds raised support student members and education initiatives and programs; students only pay $30 annually (includes all SEGD event registrations and design awards entries for free) in addition to SEGD providing outreach and resources to design programs at internationally recognized colleges and universities, and to facilitate the integration of EGD into design curricula. So far, generous donors have contributed $3,875 of the $8,000 goal to Fund a Need.
