2016 Q4 CEO Update: The Growth of our Community

Click to read the CEO update for Q4 2016: Our Growing Community

2016 received plenty of negative pressas one of the worst years, but we're a community of designers and you can't design if you are negative, so we saw 2016 very differently. Business was good and the community grew stronger and more involved. From SEGD's perspective the community witnessed another very productive year of growth by almost every measure. In fact it was another record setting year for SEGD!

Take a look at what your community looks like in numbers in the newly released resource: 2016 Experiential Graphic Design Industry Profile.

SEGD Membership hit an all time new record high of 1830 members and is headed the right way for even more growth in 2017. Your community has grown by 28% over the past 3 years.

SEGD's 27 Global Chapter

The chapters hosted 80 exciting events covering a wide range of topics in 2017. SEGD ended 2016 with a new record of 27 chapters. We have always been the smallest (but friendliest!) of the design associations and as we closed 2016, we are no longer the smallest in terms of professional chapters. Times are changing.

The next time you attend an event please remember to thank your chapter chairs for all the great work they do to support and grow the Experiential Graphic Design community in your city. Our dedicated chapter chairs do a fantastic job of creating community at a local level and are one of the strong reasons that SEGD's community continues to grow. SEGD has 57 chapter chairs supporting the organization on a volunteer basis. 2016 saw 25 new chapter leaders join as well as some of our longest serving Chapter Chairs handing over the reins to a fresh wave of leaders.

Special thanks to George Limas he completes his two year term as the Chapter Chair Liaison to the Board. George did a fantastic job working with the chapter chairs and stoking the fires of growth. Thank you George. Also a big shout out to Andrew Kuzyk,Adam Halversonand Kevin Kern all long standing SEGD Chapter Chairs and strong supporters of SEGD who rolled off last year. Your support and contributions have been crucial to helping SEGD grow.

SEGD held 86 events in 2016

A record 1,185 people attended SEGD's events in 2016. That's a 35% growth in attendance since 2013. If you have not been to one of our focused topic education events like Wayfinding, Branded Environments, Xlab, Exhibition and Experience Design and the Xplorer Digital Bootcamp, you really do have to get to at least one of them this year! Download this SEGD Events Calendarand paste it on your office notice board so that you and your boss don't forget! OK, boss, you have our permission, why don't you come along as well! We're even providing an incentive to do so!

If you have not already booked, there are two opportunities in the next few months. In March we will host the Branded Environments Eventin collaboration with the DSE show in Las Vegas. April sees us in Portland for the Business of Design event. The last one in Portland went really well and we are repeating it again this year with some external (to the profession) speakers and more time for dialog. This is an opportunity for heads of firms to get together and discuss the challenges that they encounter and get some advice from peers on how to deal with gnarly subjects like transitions, leadership and growth strategies. Book for conference now and get one other event for $200!

Web Statistics for SEGD in 2016

The growth of our on-line community at SEGD.org has been spectacular. In 2016 we had just under half a million visits from 320,000 unique visitors. Since we implemented our digital strategy of focusing the website content on members, their firms, projects and thinking in 2014, our total visits have grown from 181,000 to over 474,000, a 161% growth. The unique visitors have grown from 106,000 to 320,000, over 200%. This growth is due to all the great new member focused content combined with the excellent search optimization we have managed to achieve. It is probably worth pointing out that only 0.4% of the annual unique visits are from SEGD members! Our research tells us that about 12-15,000 of these visitors are clients or potential clients. We can see this from our Leadfeederlead analysis software. Our goal is to ensure that we connect the 99.6% who are interested in Experiential Graphic Design to your Bio's,Firm Listingsand projects and from their on to your websites if you have purchased a Firm Listing! How did we do? SEGD.org sent 53,614 visitors, 16% of our traffic on to members websites in 2016!

The website is an on-going project. We release new functionality and information daily. During the first quarter of 2017 you can expect to see the new SEGD Toolbox, which is member only access, being rolled out. The Toolbox contains new resources, information and tools to help you become more successful and grow your firm. It will contain four sections: intelligence, tools, marketing, resources.

The latest Industry Profile and Hourly Billing Rate reports are examples of the type of intelligence we will be collecting and publishing to help you understand your competitive environment and make strategic business decisions with.

The new greatly improved digital Member Directory is an example of one of the new tools developed in the 4th Quarter of 2016.

SEGD's community keeps expanding, as do the marketing tools that we have built to help you connect effectively with that audience.

Thank You

Things could hardly be more exciting, but without engaged members, SEGD would not be growing. If you have not already downloaded it, please accept this holiday gift - a lecture by Paul Mijksenaar on Information Design to get your year off to a great start.
